Abu Dhabi rolls out unified engineering classification system across ADGM and mainland
Collaboration expands between free zone and mainland professionals
ABU DHABI – The UAE capital has introduced a unified engineering classification system, marking a significant regulatory shift for firms and professionals operating across the emirate.
The initiative, led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), integrates previously separate frameworks into a single, streamlined process.
The move is designed to simplify licensing, expand collaboration, and enhance competitiveness within the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Unified system
Previously, engineering firms and professionals registered within ADGM, including those operating in Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island, followed a distinct regulatory pathway. Mainland firms, meanwhile, were classified exclusively under DMT with licences issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development.
The newly integrated system removes these divisions, allowing both groups to operate under a consistent classification and registration framework across Abu Dhabi.
Central platform
Applications from ADGM-licensed companies can now be submitted through the TAMM platform, aligning them with the same standards applied across the wider emirate. This ensures a uniform evaluation process while maintaining rigorous classification requirements for engineering firms and professionals.
The updated DMT Classification and Engineering Professions System also enables companies within the free zone to collaborate directly with mainland-registered engineers, broadening access to expertise and project opportunities.
Market impact
Officials state that the consolidated framework is expected to accelerate construction activity by improving coordination between stakeholders. Real estate developers and property owners will have a wider pool of architects, contractors and project leads to choose from, supporting increased competition and innovation.
